Dear wonderful friends,
Erik Davis, The Vermont Viking, has left this world of green
mountains, flowers, carvings, music and all things constructed to
dance upon the wind and shower our memories with whimsy.
Erik died at home, in his childhood bed, looking out over the
mountains as the sun set on June 18th. He had devoted his last
energies to witnessing his son's 6th grade promotion and died the
same day, much to the surprise of all those around him.
Your postcards, stamps, hitchhikers and words have been a
wonderful source of solace to Ben, Anna and me. Your tokens of
appreciation have served as a memorial to a beloved father and
husband. We thank you all. The notes and stamps have also helped
explain letterboxing to a continually puzzled "outer" circle of
family and friends, I think we have a few converts!
Metastatic melanoma is an unpredictable disease with a will of
its own, but there is something you can do ...use sunscreen.
Childhood peeling sunburns are the culprit.
Erik struggled with melanoma, it effects and some risky and
courageous clinical trials, for 4.5 years and died at age 56. Use
sunscreen.
With thanks,
Susan

Susan:
Please accept our sympathy on the tragic loss of Erik; a man who has done
so much to advance this wonderful pastime/sport of ours. Know that the
letterboxing community mourns with you and are ready and willing to help in
anyway possible. Please let us know.
I have been in touch this morning with Steve from Vital Communities. He is
hoping to get funding to publish the second volume of Valley Quests. As you
know, the quests/letterboxes are located in the CT River valley of Vermont and
New Hampshire. I have asked him and would like your permission to begin raising
money to help fund that second printing by collecting donations in Erik's name.
What better way to memorialize such a letterboxing advocate by taking donations
in his name to publish a book that fosters the sport he so loved? You may
contact me offline if you are interested.
May your memories of times boxing with Erik through God's country sustain
you through these difficult times and realize that you have a whole
letterboxing community of support at your aid if you so desire.
God Bless,
Mark Pepe [The Pepe's & Davidow's]

I never met Erik but I feel very sad to read of his
passing. I feel a strong connection to letterboxers
and have made some wonderful friendships and believe
that Erik would have been a true friend had we the
opportunity to meet. His family will be in our thoughts
and I would like to extend my sympathy to them.

Dear Susan, Please accept our utmost sympathies. We can only imagine the
sadness of losing a loved one, especially when there are children involved.
Our hearts go out to you. Please know that in promoting letterboxing, Erik
has brought an enormous amount of joy and togetherness to our family and I'm
sure countless others. Although we know he is irreplaceable and your loss
is deep, we hope you take comfort in knowing how his life enriched the lives
of others. We will remember him each time we head out. Sincerely, BeMa

Dear Susan,
You are in my thoughts and prayers. I too lost my dear husband to melanoma,
three and a half years ago. Your dear Erik, though he never met many of us,
helped touch our lives. He helped introduce so many of us to this peaceful,
family-friendly, active hobby. He encouraged us to go to beautiful natural places
and share the joys we found there.
Please take comfort in knowing that the heavy fog you are feeling now will
one day lift. It takes time and work and the support of friends (please know we
are here for you), but it will come. Please contact me off list if you would
like to talk, or would like some information on resources I found to be a
godsend.
One of the things that has helped me get back into life has been
letterboxing. It got me to go to places I never would have gone, and went out to meet
people I never would have met. I am truly thankful for that. Erik was one of the
pioneers in this country and we all have him to thank for that.
I am so sorry for your loss. Please take care of yourself and please reach
out if you need anything.
With love
Kim (Rustypuff)

I too would like to send my condolences to Susan and the rest of Erik's
family. He was so instrumental in establishing my favorite pastime here in the
United States. Without him, and an established few, we may not have had
letterboxing in the USA.
I also think that donating funds in Erik's honor would be a great service to
publishing the new VT Quest book. Count me in :-)
May God's Love Surround You at this time of need.

Susan, how painful this must be for you. My thoughts and prayers are
with you and your family. I only hope that the cards and stamps from
this group in some way were able to brighten Erik's final days with
reminders of the hobby he so loved and the generosity of his fellow
letterboxers across the country/world. {Hugs}

Our deepest sympathy to the family of The Vermont Viking. Thanks to
people like him our family and friends have enjoyed a wonderful hobby.
Susan, in June we sent a special impression of an "in-house only"
stamp to help Erik reach his F100 goal.
